Family to File Wrongful Death Lawsuit Over Fatal Palm Beach Car Crash

Scott Wilson, a 23-year-old civil engineer, was killed while driving to his mother’s house in Wellington when his Hyundai Sonata was struck by a black Bentley driven by wealthy polo club owner John Goodman.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating whether Goodman, the founder of the International Polo Club Palm Beach, should face any criminal charges. Scott Wilson’s father and his mother, Lili Wilson, filed wrongful-death lawsuits against Goodman.

Authorities have said Goodman, 46, ran a stop sign and crashed into Wilson’s car at 1:05 a.m., pushing it into a canal, where it landed upside-down and submerged. Wilson drowned before rescuers could reach him.

Deputies have reported that alcohol or drugs might have played a role. The crash occurred shortly after Goodman left the Players Club Bar & Restaurant, a popular nightspot in Wellington’s polo community, a manager at the bar has said.

Many details of the crash investigation have not been released. They include the speed Goodman was traveling, as well as the results of blood tests taken from Goodman while he was being treated at Wellington Regional Medical Center for a wrist injury he suffered in the crash
But Smith said the sheer distance that Wilson’s car was pushed suggests that Goodman was driving far faster than the posted 35 mph speed limit as he headed south on 120th Avenue. The collision moved Wilson’s Hyundai more than 100 feet from the westbound lane of Lake Worth Road to where it ended up in the canal.

Smith said attorneys for the parents have not had access to Goodman’s medical records from his treatment after the crash or any toxicology reports. But he said that once the lawsuits are filed, the parents will have the power to request subpoenas for those reports.

If the reports show that Goodman was under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the crash, the parents could then ask for punitive damages, Smith said.

“Why would this man be driving at a high rate of speed and run a stop sign he knew was there?” Smith said. “It all goes to his state of mind.”
