Mirena IUD Perforation and Injury Lawsuits

As a Texas medical doctor and Dallas Mirena IUD injury and wrongful death attorney, I am providing this timely update for folks who have been injured by the use of Mirena IUD. Mirena IUD Lawsuits now being evaluated investigated on behalf of young women who suffered device migration, uterine perforation, and other serious Mirena side effects.

What is Mirena IUD?

Mirena is an intrauterine device inserted directly into the uterus to prevent pregnancy, where it may remain in place for up to five years. Read the product information packet here. A number of Mirena IUD lawsuits have already been filed in Superior Court in New Jersey, prompting Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the manufacturer of the device, to seek designation of the cases as a “Mass Tort” for centralized management in Middlesex County.

Mirena IUD is being investigated on behalf of women who allegedly suffered serious Mirena injuries, including:

Abscesses
Device migration
Embedment in the uterine wall
Uterine perforations
Intestinal perforations or obstruction
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Ectopic Pregnancy

Mirena IUD Side Effects

Mirena is a small, t-shaped, plastic device that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider, and works to prevent pregnancy by releasing a low dose of levonorgestrel directly into the uterus.

Mirena was approved in 2000 as a contraceptive by the FDA. According to the FDA, Mirena side effects may include: ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy in which the fetus grows outside the uterus); intrauterine pregnancy (a pregnancy with Mirena in place); group A streptococcal sepsis; pelvic inflammatory disease; embedment of the device in the uterine wall; and perforation of the uterine wall or cervix.

In 2009, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer after finding that its Mirena promotions overstated the efficacy of the device and minimized its risks. Young women who used the Mirena IUD and suffered device migration, uterine perforations or other severe Mirena side effects may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
