Yaz and Yasmin are popular and widely-used oral contraceptives targeting women with the promises of worry free contraception. But there is potentially life threatening Yasmin side effects and Yaz side effects.Yaz was recently targeted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a prescription drug that is more dangerous and less effective than advertised by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.
In mid-August 2009, the results of two new studies of oral contraceptives, including Yaz and Yasmin, were released in the British Medical Journal Online. The studies showed that Yaz, Yasmin and the generic form of Yaz, Ocella, caused a six-fold increase in the risk of blood clots, which cause injuries such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
One of the hormones used in Yasmin is drospirenone, which is a Progestin and a known diuretic. Drospirenone can increase the level of potassium in the oral contraceptive user.
This may create the metabolic condition known as hyperkalemia, which can cause heart arrhythmias. Yaz and Yasmin users can also be at risk of developing gall bladder disease, the exact mechanism is unclear.
Bayer has failed to warn consumers about the risks related to drospirenone in Yaz and Yasmin and, it also has failed to warn women of the collective risks of using Yaz or Yasmin.
The FDA has noted that the side effects of Yaz and Yasmin are more dangerous than those of other oral contraceptives. These failures to warn have been the subject of both federal and state Yaz lawsuits and Yasmin lawsuits against Bayer.
