Zimmer Hip M/L Taper failure Lawsuits. Sadly, many metal on metal hip replacement systems and hip parts that were implanted in recent years have been associated with high failure rates and other serious complications.
Recently, Donald Fletcher from California claims that problems following a metal hip replacement were caused by defects with the Zimmer M/L Taper hip components used during his procedure. According to Fletcher, the cobalt-chromium femoral heads are an unreasonable risk of harm to patients who receive the implant.
Fletcher filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California claiming that Zimmer Biomet Inc. sold hip components that were defectively designed.
Fletcher was implanted with a Zimmer M/L Taper Hip System in his right hip in 2007 and the device failed requiring painful revision surgery in 2018.
According to Fletcher, the Zimmer hip implant causes corrosion at the head-neck/stem taper junctions, resulting in the release of toxic metal debris, consisting of cobalt and chromium metal ions leading to metallosis.
Zimmer Hip M/L Taper System design similar to Stryker LFit v40 hip
Fletcher’s early failure of the metal hip are similar to the problems associated with the Stryker LFit v40 hip recall in 2016. Fletcher alleges that both the LFit v40 femoral head and the Zimmer Versys femoral heads are made of cobalt-chromium, and both are typically connected to metal alloy stems that cause an increased risk of “taper lock failure” and toxic inflammatory metal debris.
What is the problem with Zimmer Hip M/L Taper System design?
Zimmer Hip M/L Taper System design is defective according to the lawsuits, the Zimmer M/L Taper Hip System, with a CoCr femoral head, causes fretting and corrosion at the head-neck/stem taper junctions.
The corrosion causes metal debris, metal ions and other chemical byproducts which are released into the surrounding hip tissues. These metal debris, metal ions and byproducts are extremely toxic and inflammatory destroying the surrounding tissue and bone, causing pseudotumors or fleshy growths in the hip joint. The release of metal debris and metal ions also causes metallosis or metal poisoning, as found in elevated blood cobalt and chromium levels.
Zimmer Hip M/L Taper failure Lawsuits
Zimmer is exposed to many lawsuits over the combination of the Zimmer M/L Taper Hip Prosthesis and Zimmer VerSys Hip femoral head. The Zimmer Hip M/L Taper failure Lawsuits are consolidated in the federal court system before U.S. District Judge Crotty in the Southern District of New York, as part of an MDL, or multidistrict litigation.
A huge number of Zimmer Hip M/L Taper implants
According to experts, more than 100,000 of these Zimmer hip replacements have been implanted throughout the United States.
